Good Bye and Thank You

Well I'm afraid the time has come to say good bye to our blog and all off you who have joined us on our trip.

We headed off to Edinburgh for the weekend and met up with Clare and Baby Tara, Joanne, Evelynn (Scotish crew that joined us in Rome), Brian from Canada and Gregor who all joined us for afternoon tea in the Carlton........not a backpack in sight, hahaha.

Thanks to Clare and Gregor for letting us stay....even though the pull of the youth Hostel was great..........................NOT....................hahaha

We had a great time, and once again SHOPPING seem to be the theme of the weekend....what a surprise.

We returnrd to Brighton on Sunday, and Monday was spent packing with Davina..........PACKING, REPACKING, and PACKING again, and no matter how many times we still ended up with 3 MASSIVE bags.........I told you she had bought a present for everyone in Canada....hahahha.

But alas, all good things do come to an end, and I had to sadly say good bye to Davina on Tuesday morning, and off she flew home to Toronto...............and even managed to get away with out paying excess......................................lucky or what...hahaha

So here we are, both back at work, depressed but well rested...........and you've got it, planning the next trip....hahaha

But, too all our friends and family, thank you for following along with us and for all your messages, gossip and good wishes, it was great for us both.

So all that is left to say is Good Bye............................until next time

Good Bye South Africa, hello rainy Brighton

Hi everyone

I am writing this very sad and depressed as I watch the rain beating of the ground outside my window....yes we have arrived back in Brighton, and the trip is almost over (Davina still here for another week). We cannnot belive it is practically over.........................nooooooooooooooooooo

We had a wonderful last weekend in Cape Town. After last writing, we left to go to Hermanus, a wonderful little town that is famous for its whales in the bay. Unfortunatly for us, it rained++++ and our boat trip to see the whales was cancelled. Therefore we walked along the sea side and managed to see many whales close to shore, it was fantastic, even if we did get soaked.

Next day we we arrived in Cape Town to be dropped off at the worst Backpackers in all off our trip, dirty and nasty, thank god we where only staying there 1 night.

We were delighted to be given a bed, entertained, feed and watered with fab wine by Del, Simone and 3 great kids, Bianica, Stephanie and Kevin (relatives of my brother-in-law). It made our stay in Cape Town wonderful....thanks guys.

Cape town was beautiful, we went up Table Mountin and shopped, hiked around Cape Point (most southern point of SA), and shopped, visited the botonic gardens and shopped, went to Robin Island (this is where Mandella was imprissoned, very interesting, lots of history) and did I say,.......shopping.....hahaha

We shopped quite a bit and the 2 extra bags we needed to buy where proof.........espically the extra large one Davina had to get.........I think she has bought pressies for everyone she knows in Canada ......hahaha.

We met up with the new married couple Teresa and Thomas (friends of mine from Ireland), nothing like gate-crashing a honeymoon couple....hahaha. They also had a fab time and we got a sneak preview of a few wedding snaps.......she looked fab, and Thomas was'nt too bad either.....hahaha.

For the brighton crew.....We met up with Mariaan, she looked great and is now working as a GP.

But alas all good things come to an end and after emptying our wallets of what rands we had left. we said our sad farwells and flew back to London yestarday (Monday)
The 12 hour flight was uneventful...makes a change for us too, and we are now settled back in Brighton with the RAIN........

But don't panic, you don't get rid of us that quick, we are heading to Edinburgh for the weekend for our final bash and then it is back to reality Monday morning...bummer.

We will have loads of pictures for you all over the next few days, so watch this space

The Garden Route

Hi Everyone, we guess from the lack of comments that you are all getting fed up with this never ending trip off ours...hahahaha, but don't give up, we are on the homeward stretch........

We are slowly making our way along the Garden Route (the East of SouthAfrica along the coast). It has been absoloutly stunning and very different fron the Northern Region. We have stayed in a National Park where we managed to do a 15k hike....there appeared to be a little bit of rock climbing and wading water which they forgot to inform us of...hahaha. However we pushed on and had a fab time, if not a little exhausted at the end. It was high up in the mountins and the views amazing....Davina says the super glu in her Knee is holding firm, for now........thats the stuff she got put in her ganmmy knee before she left.
However the only draw back was the fact that the nearest resturant was 4k from the hostel and we had to negotiate that with a little flash light. No problem for seasoned travelers like our selves and we arrived there and back safely....................until Davina spots the uglyiest wild bore in the back garden as big as a pony and proceeded to follow it with the flash lamp................mad or what............I thought it was a dog...hahahhaha. We did leave it alone and go to bed safely. Next morning it was confirmed by the owner and then he casually mentioned the fact that the also had a lot of local Leopard in the area.........lets say we only stayed there the one night and thank god we did'nt know that as we trudged to the resturant enconcerened..............hahahha

Today we are in a little fishing town called Mossel Bay, very quaint, but a little chilly, rain forcast. We are staying on a train..yea train, each compartment converted to bed rooms, fantastic, lying in bed looking out the window on to the sea.....
We had a little boat trip to catch a glimpse of the Seals, but sadly no whales or sharks yet....maybe tomorrow.

Its Hermanus tomorrow and then Cape Town for the weekend...we won't mention home just yet...hahahaha

The last week

Hello all, we are alive and well and still are in Petermartzburg, South Africa. We will venture onwards again on Saturday as we start the garden route leg of our journy to Cape Town. We have been staying with Louise and Roger (kates sister and husband) along with Matthew Rogers identical twin brother (very confusing initially but I think I have them both identified now-Davina).

We spent the weekend at the beach in "Umzumb" (south of Durban on the Indian Ocean) lots of sun, wind and yes rain heavy down poor and now a cold front has moved in it feels like fall in Canada and winter in Ireland. Strange weather hot one day and freezing the next, oh well its spring in Africa. Wonderful unspoiled location if anyone has extra money now is the time to invest in property here as the price of property will sky rocket in the next few years.

We had a great time relaxing at the beach and by the pool, night fishing...quite a experience for Davina and the two drunk south african men....both very happily married so don't panic...haha the men were drinking the local brew which is called "Cane" alcohol they proceded to mix with green soda yuck.... no wonder Davina had to escort them home at 3 am after Roger fell of his chair while fishing....what an experience....After three hours we only caught 2 fish, and Davina lost the big one, because the guys gave me the crappy fishing rod with the lightest line..no wonder it broke the line and got away.....

Slight mishap while we were there Catherine the cell phone addict phone broke. She now has a new phone much to her delight.....new number to follow....

Been spending lots of money the last few days in the mall and on the meander...a fabulous streatch of country that has traditional african stores and crafts.....we are now the proud owners of African rugs...how do you suppose we are going to haul them around in our back packs????

we have been wined and dined the last week and the waist bands are getting rather tight so its time to move on and continue our travels which will include exercise and less food...hahah

Africa here we come

We arrived safe and sound in Africa after a very long and exhausting flight.... due to a slight hiccup all Kate's fault..missed the flight from Rome to London, had to flight to Midlands in England and rent a car for a quick trip to London for the next flight to South Africa (I felt like I was on my own amazing race). However we had lots of time and even manage to do some duty free shopping yeah!!

Arrived in Johannesburgh and stayed with Jen and Al friends of Kate's sister. Wonderful people they looked after us very well and showed 2 weary travellers a good time in their city. Early start the next day as we travelled to the bush for our safari.

We were delighted with our private game reserve holiday. Five hours of safari off roading a day, yeah...we saw all of the big 5 and more....The lodge is called Nottens Game Reserve and only hosts 12-18 people a night. It was very welcoming and the owners were fantastic and treated us like family. There is no electricity in any of the deluxe individual cabins and it was lit by candles and lamps every evening. The reserve was not enclosed and therefore we were escorted to and from our rooms just incase a wild animal was near...we were told that a leopard had taken his kill into the tree above our cabin door a few months ago and was happily eating it during the night unknown to the sleeping guests below....nothing as exciting happened to us we saw and heard noting exciting around our cabin....even thought on our first night a elephant had terrorised another cabin with its antics....and on our last night a lion made a kill and roared all night along with the hyaena....we heard nothing as we must have been to tired from our early morning drive......

The drives where in an open top Lanrover, and we managed to see Lion, Leopard, Elephant. Rhino and Buffolo...The big 5, as well as much much more....We sat in the truck as the lion walked arround us and followed the Leopard along the road side for at least a mile..... amazing.......we have the pictures to prove it all

We had the best of time here as the pictures will show.. Our tracker was Gidion and the Ranger was Thomas who kept us safe and sound as well as entertained. Tomas liked to joke with us and tell us tales for example...we came across a hyaena that was lying on its side in a pond and he told us it was dead...as we all asked why the hyaena raised its head and looked at us as Thomas laughed...he was always doing things like this. On our walk throught the bush on morning we stood and watched a giraffe feeding on a tree nearby and as the Giraffe turned and walked towards us Thomas told us to get ready to run as the Giraffe can charge and kill you... as it lumbered up Davina was arguing with him and indicated that she thought they were friendly but he insisted it was a dangerous animal like the lion... As the giraffe approached in its quiet gentle fashion with us really wondering about its potential behaviour it gentely walked past and Thomas again laughed at us green horns....haha

We had the most wonderful and amazing time and highly recommend Nottens Game rerserve as a holiday for all.....

We are now in Pietermaritzburgh (what a name) with Louise and Roger (Catherine's sister and husband) it took us 9-10 hours to drive here from the reserve yesterday. Tomorrow we are off to the beach for more R&R.... as we have not had enough todate....haha

Beautiful town, Luca, just outside Pisa in Tuscany. We stayed here for 3 days in the Youth Hostel that was a former Convent........without a doubt one of our faviourate places so far.

Venice

Hello from Venice,

We have been resting a little here and enjoying the sights and of course a gondala ride through the canal at night to help leanne celebrate her birthday I will not say how old she is.... Haha just to say lets hope we look as good at her age.

still here with the Canadian and our token Scottish travelers, having a great time and spending lots of money. no disasters as yet and don't worry Lauren we will ensure your mum gets her purse onto the plane but after that we are not responsible..haha...

The other travellers have arrived safely at their destinations and a big thank you for travelling so far to participate in the festivities.

Venice is beautiful and full of history (no smells from the canals as previous visitors have indicated to us, thank goodness). The weather has been fabulous but cate said if she had a shot gun she would be eliminating all the pigions in the square... I am glad that none of them pooped on me.... but they got the woman who wanted to eliminate them..haha revenge of the pigions....

We know we keep saying the pictures are coming but pictures will follow when our friends arrive home as we are unable to upload from an internet site. Lauren Petroff you may need to help your mum with this task...and by the way she thought the builing in Venice was swaying way up in the 4th floor...perhaps it was the alcohol...who knows... haha

Today we are off to florence to buy so leather...haha and to see some sights we think...then its back to Rome and our final night in Italy.. dosen't time fly.. next stop South Africa yeah. But we will be sad to say goodbye to our travelling companions this week.

The Day after The big Bash

Helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

No we have not dissappeared just too busy drinking eating and been Tourist in theHoly city.

Where do we begin.........

Stayed in Pompeii for 2 nights, had a great time seeing the ruins. Met a fab lady who was on an excavation dig at the ruins, So she was able to fill us in on details of Pompeii's history.

Went to Sorreto for an evening watching the cruise liners come into port as we were sipping our lovely wine (not for Davina although as we had no time for a hospital visit.... alergy to wine for those who do not know such a shame as we are in Italy were the wine is cheeper than anyother drinks including H2O)

Arrived in Rome on Wed. met the girls from Canada, Rosie from Scottland and Lindsey from London (but she is Scottish, we do not want to get into trouble for calling a Scottish woman English, haha

First disaster.....Neal Petroff your wife left her purse in the Taxi (but Davina met a lovely man as she scrambled to find wine to help sooth the leanne's trauma) but don't panic the purse was returned by the limo driver with everything intact.

Second disaster poor Rosie had to wear others knickers for two days as they lost her luggage but do not panic as her case arrived with clean clothes.

Next day seen the arrival of Caroline from Brighton, Brendan and Regina from Canada. That night the girls from Edinburgh (clare, Joanne, and Evelyn)
Last disaster the girls plane was diverted to another airport 3 hours away due to Thunder storm which caused a plane sliding of the run way and knock out the power to ther Rome airport. They had to take a 3 hour bus ride to arrive in Rome at 3 AM. But they are safe and healthy..

Last few days lots of sight seeing and visiting the many, many , many churches in Rome including the Vatican.. (can you beleive Davina even bought 5 sets of Rosary beads as gifts the church did not fall down...I'll convert her yet....Kate..)

The big party::::: first of all I want to thank everyone for all their birthday wishes, cards , presents, calls and texts from everywere, it has been overwhelming, to say the least, thank you. To everyone here in Rome, what wonderful and special friends you are to come so far to get a bit of birthday cake......Love you all, thank you
And to all my wonder family and friends at home, we will have a post birthday bash when I get back

I have had a wonderful day and fabulous night out to 3:30 am (again the last to leave the bar haha... you are all fabulous and I thank you for sharing this special (if not painful) event.

Oh were to start.... Those crazy Scottish and Irish women provided the reserved Canadians with loads of laughs.... but we did manage to hold our own.. we had our own stand up comic Derry Clare and for all that know her she has not changed and you will understand how much my face hurts from laughing all night.

Debby provided a crown and party treats for the night which Kate had to wear all over the city announcing her big 40th birthday. What a night we even had the waiters involved in the party.. little Angelo must have been 5 foot tall but by the end of the night I'm sure he felt 6 foot tall with all the praise and attention he received.. Had a great meal but I do not think they have ever seen anything like this display of activity before in their resturant... We will sent a picture for them to put up on the wall..... we also got to write on the wall and ceiling and of course a few of us had to even gt up on the table to reach......

The drink was plenty but we all managed to stumble home after many laughs and picking up many stray men on the way to the Irish bar.. The singing and laughter could be heard for mile around and I am suprised that no one pitch water on us from above as we walked the streets of Rome..haha

Kate met 3 lovely little Irish men 20 years of age going to Queens university in Belfast (in Canada she is now referred to as a cougar which is a 40+ woman who stalks younger men...hahaha.... go cougar go....... it was the Best nigh they have had so far and they say Kate can come and party with then anytime in Belfast.... (Kate says she still has it Joanne)

The rest of us provided entertainment for men from around the world who were having a very boring night until we arrived.... but not to worry everyone arrived back at the hotel safe and sound.....with the 3 little Irish men escorting Kate home....what gentlemen you have in Ireland can we get some transported to Canada.....

Today, with a few hangovers the Scottish and Irish will return home and the Canadians along with Rosie our Scottish lassie will travel north to see what trouble we can get into.....

Neil do not worry, I have already been following Leanne around the hotel and retreived her misplaced belongings as she and Debby along with Rosie left to go north earlier than Catherine and I, as we have to help the others get off to the airport.

Hello from Tuscany

We are currently staying in the YOUTH HOSTEL.......hahahha.....in a little place called Luca just out side PISA. The hostel is fabulous, an old converted convent, sur to be safe.
The city is surrounded by a wall, full of churches, monuments and SHOPS....lovely, hahahhaha. We have spent the morning cycling around the wall and cobble streets, it helps to work of all the pasta and Pizzas we are eating....hahaha

We went to Pisa yesterday to see the leaning tower, very impressive, but city too hot and sticky.

Davina want to stay here for ever, she is busy looking to marry one of the old stooped over men so she can get all their money when they kick the bucket and be happy for life.............hahahah

Only one more BITE for me, living on high dose Vit. C to scare them off, obviously its not working yet. ( people in the dorm and guess who is the only one to get biten last night.....I rest my case. Im just far to sweet....hahahhahahah

Off to Naples tomorrow to explore Pompii, should be great.

Hi Everyone

Its now Thursday and we have made our way up to the north of Italy to a little town called Belluno............no one speaks English so our Italian is improving drastically, we know at least 10 words...hahahahaha
Its just at the foot of the Dolimites, the train ride up was breathtaking, well worth the 5 hours on the train.

Few mishapps...surprise surprise, I (Kate) have been 'BIT' already on the foot, and its not a pretty sight...the Canadian viewers will know what I mean.................nightmare...picture to follow as soon as we can get them on to disc.

Went , or tried to go on a little hike to day, got the bus to a tiny village - Mis - could'nt find the trial to the 'so called' lake, Davina got stuck in the nettles trying and we were so hot and fed up, tried to get a bus back. Waited for 2 hours on the steps of the church, I've said all my prayers for the whole trip Mum, even managed to get davina to join in.............hahahah

Set and watched the little old men going in and out of the pub for a swift one while the women where all busy doing the housework....I thought I was still in Ireland...hahahhahaha...mind you I wondered what they thought of us 2 weirdos sitting on the church steps...hahahah.

Dont panic, we are now back safe and sound, getting the Train tommorow, hopefully to Pisa...if we can get them to understand with all of our 10 words.

One Week To Go!!

MILAN

Our first stop was halted by the car, needed "Tom the RAC man" to give it a jump start prior to leaving Brighton.. For those Canadians RAC=CAA but not too worry we made it to the airport with time to spare, imagine that....... this was not Catherine's car but a rental.

Flight was great then we almost got arrested for riding the bus for free......we did not know a ticket was necessary prior to entering the bus.....oh well live and learn.

Hotel was okay (I know we were suppose to be backpacking and staying in a hostel, but what the hell...) hot humid weather in Milan similar to the Toronto summer....summer for those of you who live in Ireland...this is when the sun shines for a whole day and kate's hair is like a windbush...

We had our palms read by a bisexual spanish individual....who predicted some strange things......but assured us it would be a wonderful trip......what a load of nonsence....

No Italian stalions yet....more like a deranged donkey......hehehehehehhe

Off to the Alps tomorrow, to do a little hiking... and see what life has to offer.....
